Did you know that a blog can increase credibility, visibility, and your customer base? It sounds crazy, but it’s true.
As we move more into a digital age, people want to find information online. Building a website or social media page is critical, but that’s just the first step into increasing your digital presence. Your next step should be a blog.
“But I don’t know the first thing about blogging!” you type as you read through this post. Well, it’s not as hard as it may seem. If you keep reading, you’ll get our 5 best tips on how to blog like a pro.

1. Find Your Niche

Part of any successful business is narrowing down your target audience to a specific niche. Are you promoting to families, married couples, or those from past generations? If you’re already an established business, it’s likely that you already have a market in mind. When you create your blog content, it’s important that you make content specifically for that audience. Run an auto repair shop? Create posts about DIY auto repairs or regular maintenance people should do on their vehicles. Don’t have an online audience yet? 2. Pick a Keyword

Blogging is more than just writing about something that sounds good to you. That’s part of it, but if you want visibility, you have to know how to work within Google’s parameters. There exists something called Search Engine Optimization (SEO for short). It refers to formatting content in a way that Google will be able to understand it and place it in search results easier. The most important part of that process is the keyword. A keyword is a specific word or phrase that you target in your post. For example, this post’s keyword is “tips on how to blog.” Not only is that phrase in the title, but it will appear throughout the text. By targeting that keyword, we better our chances of ranking higher in Google’s search results when people type in “tips on how to blog.” We recommend picking longer keywords that aren’t heavily targeted by other sites and companies. The less competition you have, the better your chances are of ranking high. Google has a lot of information on the subject, which you can find here.

3. Guest Blog on Other Websites

One great way to get your website ranking higher in search results is to have guest posts on other websites. If you post on other websites, they usually let you supply a personal link to your own blog. The more places link to your blog, the higher you’ll rank in the end. This usually means reaching out to more popular businesses or websites, but it will help your online presence. On the flipside, you always want to have at least two links on your own blog posts: one that goes to an entirely different website, and one that goes to another page on your own site.

4. Create a Calendar and Stick to It

Like any part of a business, blogging takes time, dedication, and consistency. One of the easiest ways to stay on top of this is to create a blog calendar. Within the calendar, you can plan topics, keywords related on those topics, and the dates in which you plan on publishing the content. A calendar also helps you adhere to a schedule, which will see you filling your blog in no time. As you get people who follow your content, having a set schedule makes it easier for them to see new posts as they are published.

5. Learn to Write Well

Of all our tips on how to blog, this is the perhaps the most important one. You have to be a good writer. If you struggle with grammar, spelling, passive vs active voice, and more, then there is some work to be done. Your content could rank well and have all the SEO checkmarks needed to succeed, but if it’s not good writing, people won’t read it. Look at successful blogs in your industry. See some of the writing techniques they use to make their content interesting. What do you like about it? What would you do differently? Writing isn’t for everyone, so if you find yourself struggling or not having enough free time, then you could always hire someone or contract a freelancer to do it for you.

BONUS TIP: Promote Your Blog

As you increase your online presence, you can get your website, your social media, and your email to work in tandem with one another. It’s not enough to just write blog posts on your website and hope people click on them. You have to invite people to read. You can share your blogs on your social media pages to get your followers to read. Additionally, if you create email campaigns or have subscribers, you can send them an email with blog updates.
